Carrying the tool is half of it. These are the repairs the kit exists for — read them before the trip, and practise the tire change at home.
Fix a flat on a tube-type wheel
The core off-road repair. Practise it once in the garage before you need it on a hillside, and time yourself.
Plug a tubeless tire without removing the wheel
Ten minutes at the roadside and you ride away. This is why a plug kit is the highest-value item on any tubeless bike.
Rejoin or shorten a broken chain
A thrown chain strands you unless you carry a master link and a breaker — together they weigh less than 200 g.
Ride out with a snapped lever or shifter
The most common crash damage, and the one that most often ends a ride. Spares are light; bodges are ugly but they work.
Diagnose a bike that suddenly won't start
Most 'dead bike' failures are a fuse, a connector or a side-stand switch, and all three are roadside fixable.
Shake the kit down before the trip
The only way to know your kit works is to use it in your driveway, where a missing socket costs nothing.
