BMW motorcycle tool kit: the Torx sizes to carry

If you have worked on Japanese bikes and then buy a BMW, the first surprise is that your hex keys mostly stay in the bag. BMW standardised on internal Torx across bodywork, brackets, and much of the chassis, and a hex key in a Torx head does nothing but round it out.

The second surprise is the under-seat kit. It is well made and it covers the bodywork, but on many models it is missing the sizes you need for a wheel — the exact job you will be doing at the roadside.

Sizes that come up

Across recent boxers, F-series and the big GS bikes the recurring Torx sizes are T25, T30, T40, T45 and T50, with T20 for small covers and clamps. Hex is still present — commonly 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm — and there are a couple of larger spanner sizes for axles and the rear suspension.

Buy bits rather than keys where you can: a 1/4in bit set plus a compact ratchet covers all the sizes for a fraction of the weight and reaches into recesses that an L-key cannot.

  • Torx bits: T20, T25, T30, T40, T45, T50

What the under-seat kit does not cover

Riders who plan long trips on BMWs almost always end up assembling their own roll: the OEM kit rarely lets you pull a wheel, and the plug tool for the boxer's recessed plugs is a separate item. Add a plug wrench, a torque reference for the axle, and the tool needed to remove the bash plate if you carry oil.

Tubeless cast wheels on the RT and the road-biased GS models mean a plug kit is far more valuable than levers. The spoked GS Adventure with tubes is the opposite: levers, a rear tube and a patch kit.

Electrical and CAN-bus reality

Modern BMWs use CAN-bus wiring: there is no conventional fuse for every circuit and a failed accessory can produce a warning rather than a dead circuit. Carry the fuses your model does use, a multimeter, and accept that deeper faults are a dealer job — plan your route and your recovery cover accordingly.

    Ball-end long-arm keys, or 1/4in hex bits plus a driver if you already carry a ratchet.

    1/4in with a 3/8in adapter for the axle.

    A stubby ratchet plus a short extension packs smaller than a full socket set. Add a 1/4in-to-hex-bit adapter to share the ratchet with your bits.

    Boxer plugs sit deep — the OEM kit tool is often absent.

Which Torx sizes does BMW use most?
T25, T30, T40, T45 and T50 cover the majority of chassis and bodywork fasteners, with T20 on small covers. Always confirm against your own model's manual.
Is the BMW under-seat toolkit enough?
For bodywork, yes. For a wheel removal or a plug change on most models, no — that is why long-distance BMW riders build their own roll.
Do I need SAE tools for a BMW?
No. BMW motorcycles are metric throughout. Inch-sized fasteners are a Harley-Davidson and Indian issue, not a BMW one.
